Juniors night – Rimfire on range three – Range three closed event

July 7, 2021 @ 18:00 - 21:00

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:00pm on Wednesday, repeating until October 27, 2021

Philosophy:
The JR Program at Blue Ridge Sportsmen’s Club is set up to train junior and adult shooters in the Principles of Marksmanship using paper and steel targets. By reinforcing the Principles of Marksmanship on paper, these mastered mechanical skills will be transferred to challenging scenarios. Future endeavours may involve travelling to CRPS/ ORPS matches throughout Ontario. CRPS (Canadian Rimfire Precision Series) and ORPS (Outlaw Rimfire Precision Series) matches are hosted at ranges in Guelph, London, Stittsville, North Bay, and Sudbury currently.

Where: Range 3 BRSC

When: Wednesday evenings 6 PM or 1800 Hrs until dusk 07

Cost: Absolutely nothing for the training and practice at BRSC. Competitors and students are expected to participate with their own .22 rimfire rifle (hopefully scoped) and reliable Rimfire ammunition. Travel, lodging, Match fees will vary for those families and competitors that choose to travel to out of town matches. Think of Minor Hockey Tournament adventures but without the snow, ice, cold temperatures, but with ALL members of the family being able to compete and have some shared experiences.

Coaching Credentials: I am a retired 30 year professional educator from Collingwood’s Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School. I have 15 years in and out of uniform with extensive service in 3 Infantry Regiments both Reserve and Regular Forces. Since 1998 I have been helping the local Army Cadet unit, 1909 RCACC with their Marksmanship Programme. I am still helping their Shooting Teams currently. Coincidentally several of the graduates from our Cadet Programme have served in multiple deployments and have all returned safely. Some have experienced many successful marksmanship engagements in hot and sandy locations. My background comes from over 35 years of Service Rifle, Sniper Rifle, and Service Pistol Competitions at the Provincial and National Levels. For the past 7 years I have run a small business teaching CQB and M14 Rifle clinics across the country from Halifax to Coastal BC. Just before Covid 19 Pandemic I was conducting 6 Sniper Rifle matches at Garrisson Petawawa annually. I have been a member at BRSC since our family moved here in 1991. It’s time for me to step up locally and help out the future of our shooting community.

FAQ’s:
* Can adults learn and shoot as well? YES, but the juniors have priority on the firing line.
* Do we need to bring our own rimfire rifles? YES, and hopefully that rifle has a scope mounted
* Can you mount the scope for us? YES, I will teach you how to use the my tools and learn this foundation skill
* Why Wednesday night? BRSC’s Trap Programme is my inspiration having shot Trap nights with some fantastic people. Don’t mess with success. It’s my way of paying back the Trap Shooters. Leave your budding young shooters, go shoot a round of trap or 2, then come and have your child school you with their new skills. I owe the Trap Committee for showing ME the way to build community.
* What role do the parents share? Transportation committee, training crew, safety supervision, and coaching duties
* Is there a great deal of money involved? YES and NO. The intention is the have more kids shooting. Parents can choose the level of involvement that’s right for their young competitors
* Is there an age requirement? NO. Safety and responsibility is top priority. Parents will be responsible for their children’s ability to safely handle the hardware and software.
* How can one RSO run the Range 3 firing point? I am skilled at running a firing line over 30 stations wide with appointed ROs (read: trained parents). At the National Service Rifle Matches we have 76 firing points wide with corresponding target(s) lanes.
* How can one Coach teach many shooters? I am a Master Educator skilled in arranging skilled outcomes/expectations simultaneously with various appointed coaches with different and improving comfort levels. Everyone develops at their own pace. Enough said.
* What happens when my kids improve? Just like any children’s programming, safety and development are top outcomes. When the equipment you provide is superseded by their skill set, assessments and further improvements may be in order. Read: new and improved equipment. I can steer you in that new direction.
* Can this game be taken nationally? YES, there exists national championships (usually in November around the London, ON area)
* Can parents compete alongside their children? YES only if they don’t mind getting beaten by 12 year old female champions. That’s the intention; family participation.
* Is there a progression of skills and expectations? YES, first we develop/coach the Principles of Marksmanship on the bench using paper targets. Then we progress to learned and mastered shooting (sitting , kneeling, standing) positions using paper targets. Only when each position is mastered by demonstrating said position building will the shooter graduate to steel targets. Later on, we progress to very challenging obstacles IE Barricades, barrels, chairs, step ladders, simulated rooftops, etc.
* Will there be a prize table at the matches? YES, sometimes SWAG (promotional material from the Sponsors) and sometimes product (shooting equipment, also from the sponsors)
* What happens if my kid is not having fun? Then we stop, reassess, and reset the learning activity so that success is the immediate outcome. We can only build on success as a foundation. That’s my role as a programme director.
* How do we know if we are successful? You child’s self esteem, confidence, and outlook will immediately bear this. This JR Program is a stepping stone for success in future challenges.
* What’s in it for parents? I will train you into coaches first, then safety officers, then RO’s (Range officers) conducting the stages, then future Match Directors/Organizers. The Match Directors across the country can trace their lineage to my training over the years. I will train you as Mental Management experts; I will direct parents to other published literature so that you will facilitate the growth of your future athlete. For example: Parents; what’s the first question you ask you competitor/child after any game? What do you want on your Pizza/ burger/ ice cream cone? Sounds simple ? It’s a fundamental question that often is overlooked. Ask any champion about their positive and negative mental moments.
* Do I take any payments? NO… but Timmy’s coffee is always welcome. Ha ha ha
